When I ask industry professionals what the most important skills are in the beauty and wellness industry, their answer is usually “technical skills”. And certainly, being adept with your shears is important. But even more important are a person’s communication skills.

Communication is the basis of all relationships. Whether personal or professional, you can’t build a healthy relationship without effective communication. If you are in the role of a business owner, manager, or a service provider, communication is the key to building long-term relationships with your staff and clientele.

Watch this month’s video to zero in on your communication and leadership skills.

Communication can be a funny thing because so many think it’s easy be good at it. However, the reality is that being an effective communicator takes a lot of work. It is a skill set, just like cutting hair or performing any salon/spa service. Effective communicators know that there are three main components of being an effective communicator. These three components sometimes are referred to as the 3 V’s.

Visual communication – is your body language and your facial expressions. I like to think of visual as all the non-verbal communications we display as we are communicating. Visual communication accounts for 55% of effective communication.

Vocal communication – or the tone of our voice, in other words it’s how we say it. This accounts toward 38% of effective communication.

Verbal communication – the actual words we use during our conversations and they only account for 7% of effective communication.

Now, if we take these figures in consideration and apply them to our face-to-face communications, it would suggest that 93% non-verbal (visual and vocal) are more important than the actual words we speak.

Think about how you interact and communicate with your employees, your peers and your customers. Are you paying attention to your body and your voice? Being aware of these two main components of effective communication can be a powerful tool, and if used well, it’s actually one of the most important tool you have.

To help you in being a more effective communicator, we’ve included a communication tool. In it are 45 ways you can improve communication with your team (and if you don’t have a team, you still work with other people and with clients and most of these can apply to those relationships as well). Heck, it can even be used in your personal relationships.
